Scott Van Rooijen's report

Added on Mon, 26 Nov 2012 0:00 AM

Occasionally one takes on a task without fully comprehending the underlying challenge. When Mark asked me if I was interested in taking part in the 120km Full Moon Adventure Race in Parys this was one of those very scenarios. The question did not just pertain to the race itself, there was the race preparation. This involved hikes, rides, night runs and kayak lessons these all being activities I would have never have undertaken had I not said yes.

Collapsing on a camper chair at the 4th Leg transition in the early hours of the morning, my entire body pleading for rest, I thought of that question once again. We had been racing for in excess of 12 hours and were exhausted; this was only the halfway point. What had I got myself into? Had I made the right decision?

Reflecting on the race I know I made the right choice. One specific moment optimised this…… Attempting to paddle down the Vaal River, rain pelting across us whilst our kayak was being further wedged between rocks by the current of the rapids. Stuck in this predicament my teammate (Michelle) and I turned to each other and burst out laughing. Both of us looked hilarious, in a stereotypical movie scene, drenched in rain and cursing our paddles. My point being is six months ago I would have never imagined myself kayaking down the Vaal river in an adventure race in the pouring rain genuinely enjoying the experience.

I would like to thank Mark and Monique for their patience and expertise in organising these events, their guidance in the race and general fun demeanour throughout the past few months. So if asked the question I had made the right decision the answer would not only be a resounding yes but I would do it all again too!

After committing to entering the 120km Full Moon Adventure Race in Parys, I realised I must be slightly crazy, racing for 24 hours does not seem normal or sane to most people, but Mark ensured we got in some proper training, even though Breedts Nek was one of the toughest training rides I’ve had in a long time.

By the time race day had arrived I was feeling cautiously confident that we would be able to finish, after doing the race briefing Mark plotted the map while Michelle helped the two confused first timers, Scott and myself, figure out what needed to go into which race box.

At 12pm on Saturday we were at the race start ready to go, the start gun had sounded and we were off on our first hiking section. As we started ascending the “small” mountain I realised this was going to be A LOT tougher than I had anticipated.

The kayak section down the Vaal River started off pretty well until we capsized in the rapids as it started pouring with rain and hail. Mark and I nearly lost our backpacks and paddles in the commotion but we managed to get back onto the fluid and back on our way with a little help from the Assitport AR team. Three and a half hours and 18km later I was so happy to get back onto dry land after what seemed to be a never-ending stretch of water.

Leg three was a much longer than expected hiking section of 19kms. This was made worse by a tricky CP6 which had us searching down the wrong kloof for a couple of hours. Finally we found the elusive point ‘C’ and moved on. We climbed over fences, we were abused by thorn bushes and we searched through an old bat infested mine before reaching the next transition to begin our 29km cycle leg. It was by now 11:30pm and I was ready to throw in the towel.  However after a motivational pep talk by my team I was convinced to get on my bike and carry on despite a painful ITB.

Leg 3 sped by and before I knew it we had also completed the hiking Leg 4 (only a 3km scramble up a mountain surrounded by dense thorn bush) and the next thing I saw was the sun starting to rise. I could not believe we had been racing for over 16 hours already.  By now we were mid-way through Leg 5 which was a 39km stretch back toward Parys. Who knew it was possible to fall asleep whilst cycling? I found out it was and did so many times along that stretch. We were now heading to our next transition where we would take on a short hike and what turned out to be a huge abseil into a quarry dam.

Finally we’d arrived at the last hike of the race. Mid-way through this Leg and after a sharp climb we had arrived at the obstacle I had been waiting for the entire race - a 43m abseil down a sheer rock face into a quarry dam followed by a fresh swim to the CP point. After a short walk back to the transition we took on the final cycle Leg of 13kms back to the start finish area. To add insult to injury this was mostly uphill on a corrugated and potholed track with the sun blazing down on us. At this point Scott decided it would be an awesome idea to get our first flat tyre of the race.

We finally managed to get to the finish at 12pm on Sunday after 24hrs of racing. To finish was such a relief as well as a proud moment of achievement. All in all I had an awesome time and I can’t wait to do the next one.

Thanks to everyone in my team - Michelle and Scott for always being there to motivate me when I needed it most and especially Mark for organising it all and being a great mentor, helping me through the tough moments and most of all introducing me to the addictive sport of adventure racing.

For all those curious about Adventure Racing but just haven’t had the opportunity to try it, or haven’t made time to make it happen – make a plan – it’ll make you feel alive and keep you wanting more.
